How does Thermage work?
The only way to tighten skin non-surgically is with heat. Heat causes an immediate effect by shrinking existing collagen strands. The secondary effect is one of “wound response” and this spurs the body to produce new collagen over time. Since new collagen is tight and springy, the skin firms up as this new collagen are produced.
A primary obstacle lies in getting enough heat into the skin at effective depth levels to create both immediate and cumulative responses without damaging the surface skin or over-wounding the tissues below.

Thermage uses unique radiofrequency (RF) technology to safely heat the deep layers of your skin while cooling the surface of your skin to keep it intact during the procedure.
This deep heating stimulates your body’s natural skin renewal process, which helps tighten existing collagen and form new collagen. Over time, sagging or wrinkled skin is replaced with smoother, tighter skin; improved tone and texture; and an overall younger looking appearance.
What is a Thermage treatment like?
Thermage treatments are performed only in a doctor’s office by Thermage-certified personnel. A Thermage Face procedure averages about 45 minutes and you can reapply make-up and return to routine activities right after treatment. A Thermage procedure for other parts of the body can last up to an hour and a half, depending on the size, location and condition of the area to be treated.
Here’s what happens during a Thermage treatment:
- During the procedure, a handheld device is pressed against your skin to safely deliver heat to the inner layers, at the same time cooling the surface of the skin.
- Each time the device touches your skin, you’ll feel a brief cooling sensation, followed by a deep but brief heating sensation, followed by another cooling sensation. The heating sensation is a sign that the deep layers of your skin are reaching effective temperatures for tightening.
- Throughout the procedure, your physician will ask for feedback on the level of heat sensation to help balance your comfort with maximum results.
- After treatment, your skin may be slightly red, but most people resume regular activities immediately after treatment. There’s no recovery time or special follow-up care.
